Heterodox Academy (HxA) is a nonpartisan collaborative that provides frameworks, tools, and community to thousands of educators, administrators, and students. As a nonprofit we work to improve the quality of research and education by promoting open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement in institutions of higher learning.

Thank you for your interest in the Open Inquiry in STEM Funding Competition. This funding competition is now closed. Keep an eye on our website for possible future funding competitions.

Applications are open to groups of 2-3 lead applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • All are members of HxA (check the list; apply for membership)
  • All are active (not retired) faculty members, staff members, administrators, or graduate students at the same college or university.
  • All are willing to grow the HxA Campus Community as Co-Chairs (or designate a replacement) through Spring 2026 or Spring 2027.
  • All agree to the Program Expectations outlined below.

HxA encourages applicant groups that include diverse disciplines, approaches, perspectives, and ranks.

In addition to the 2-3 lead applicants, a founding group may include up to 2 undergraduate students as “undergraduate affiliate(s)” who are also HxA members. This is optional.

Retired/emeritus faculty and staff are welcome to be involved in group planning but should not be lead applicants.
